What does viability look like at all scales of organic production?
Drawing on their combined years of experience, diverse cropping systems, landscapes, markets, and scales of production Zoë, Thomas, and Dick will share their insights into the challenges that they face and approaches that they are taking to be viable organic producers.
Zoë Bradbury operates Valley Flora, a diversified fresh market farm nestled along the banks of Floras Creek on the southcoast of Oregon. With her mom and sister, a fantastic crew, and a team of draft horses, she has been cultivating vegetables, berries, flowers, herbs and orchard fruits for local coastal markets since 2008.
Thomas Whittle is the farm manager and team leader for Wild Cow LLC, in Gooding, Idaho. They have two certified organic dairies that together milk 1,000 cows and farm 2,500 acres of certified organic land. We raise alfalfa, pasture, corn silage, and grain corn. Thomas is currently participating in the mentorship program with Oregon Tilth.
Dick Peixoto exemplifies a recent type of organic farmer who, after a long career in conventional farming, transitions to organics for a mixture of reasons. He decided to transition to organic farming, and began Lakeside Organic Gardens on a 55-acre farm in Watsonville in 1996. The company has expanded their operation to over 3000 acres and they grow 50 different crops. Producing over 55 commodities year-round, on 3,000 acres, Lakeside Organic Gardens are committed to being 100% organically grown in California.

Sustainable Food Systems
Winona LaDuke is an internationally renowned activist working on issues of sustainable development, renewable energy and food systems. She lives and works on the White Earth reservation in northern Minnesota and is a two time vice presidential candidate with Ralph Nader for the Green Party.
As Executive Director of Honor the Earth, she works nationally and internationally on the issues of climate change, renewable energy, and environmental justice with Indigenous communities.
In her own community, she is the founder of the White Earth Land Recovery Project, one of the largest reservation based nonprofit organizations in the country, and a leader in the issues of culturally based sustainable development strategies, renewable energy and food systems. In this work, she also continues national and international work to protect Indigenous plants and heritage foods from patenting and genetic engineering.

The True Cost of Food: True Cost Accounting and Organic Market Trends
We pay for food in many ways, not just at the checkout; but the true cost varies according to how the food is produced and how well or poorly it contributes to a healthy diet. True Cost Accounting in food and agriculture is a currently evolving method for assessing the true costs and benefits of different food production systems with implications for everyone.
Patrick Holden is the Founding Director and Chief Executive of the Sustainable Food Trust. He was the founding chairman of British Organic Farmers in 1982, before joining the Soil Association, where he worked for nearly 20 years and during which time the organization led the development of organic standards and the market for organic foods.
His advocacy for a major global transition to more sustainable food systems now entails international travel and regular broadcasts and talks at public events.
